Book Redesign
All of the imagery on my covers and internal spreads was illustrated in Procreate, using the symmetry tool for the outer borders.
MOODBOARD
For this moodboard, I compiled images that reflect The Last Unicorn, a movie based on Peter S. Beagle's book. I wanted my design to be reminiscent of an old fairytale, and when I envisioned this book, I pictured it as a leatherbound hardcover with gold and silver embossed designs.
SKETCH
My sketching process for this project was a little different because I already knew what style I was replicating. I didn't make any large sketches; instead, I stuck with thumbnails before jumping straight into creating illustrations for the design. I had a clear idea in mind, so I didn't want to spend too much time sketching.
The flat images on this cover include two additional panels that would be inside the book if this were a sleeve for a hardcover. I treated my design as a collector's edition, incorporating elements from the movie and the animated film's style. The bottom border of my front cover features imagery similar to the intricate tapestries shown in the movie's intro, meant to depict the unicorn's home before her journey to find the rest of her species.
I wanted my covers to have a sense of elegance but didn't want to overwhelm the viewer, so I emphasized the focal elements by making them silver. I also decided to keep the typography simple, using only Times New Roman throughout the design.
Below are additional mockup images alongside flat images of my final spreads.
My splash page once again features imagery from the movie, showing the unicorns the protagonist keeps trapped in the ocean.
